Family gossip says he was the black sheep of the family. He was a Ship's engineer and worked on the ships that sailed between England and Australia. He also worked on ships that ran between Cooktown and New Guinea. He met Julia on a boat sailing to Australia. They lived in the outback and the children's births were recorded later in Church. They lived for a while on Thursday Island and ran/owned the Torris Straits Hotel. His name is on several plots of land on an early map of the Island.

They returned to England before the birth of their fifth child and ran a hotel before he returned "to finish off some business" and never returned. The barmaid disappeared at the same time and this seems to be confirmed by findings in Australia. At the time of his death he was listed as a labourer.

The following is an extract from an email from Janice.

John Henry Edgar Hose and Phyllis E E  Griffin did not travel together to Australia.

JHEH left London on the ship Jumna which arrived in Brisbane 23rd July 1889. Departure from London would be about May 1889

It is more than likely that Phyllis got pregnant immediately before JHEH left for Australia (like the night before - or even after!! there is 10 months between his departure and Jacks birth)-  and he wouldn't have known about her pregnancy for some time.

Phyllis arrived much later - giving birth to Jack Aramac Griffin on board ship 26th March 1890. You have her as probably sailing on the Lasagowrie - but this doesnt tie in with the 'Aramac' theme. I couldnt find any ship named the Lasagowrie. Found several 'Aramac's - ships seem to be renamed more than once. Couldnt find an 'Aramac' in the vicinity of Australia at the time of Jack's birth ( but doesn't mean there wasn't one - not all info available etc) but I did find a  timetable for a ship which left London 8th February and sailed to Australia called  'Tara' but unfortunately cant find a passenger list for it. This ship arrived Brisbane on 1st April 1890, which would be in the right place at the right time - Jack Aramac Griffin born 26.03.1890 off Rockhampton , but this is only supposition.
